⚡ Quick answer

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a non-foaming cream cleanser built for normal to dry skin, around three ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and it is fragrance free. Buy it if ordinary washes leave your skin tight. If your skin leans oily, or you want a foaming wash that rinses fully clean, CeraVe’s Foaming Cleanser is the better fit in the same range.

Verdict: the safe default for dry and sensitive skin, not a universal cleanser

This is one of the most conservative formulas in our Face Wash Database: a fragrance free cream that spends its budget on barrier ingredients instead of foam or fragrance. For skin that runs dry, tight or reactive, that trade is exactly right, and it is why this cleanser is the reference point our other cream cleansers get compared against.

The same conservatism is its limit. It does not lather, it is not built to strip a day of oil off oily skin, and it was never meant to be the only step on heavy makeup days. Read it as a specialist for dry and sensitive skin, not as the one bottle every bathroom should hold.

This review rests on CeraVe’s published formula and full ingredient list, the live Amazon listing for the exact product linked on this page (checked October 2026), and the documented behaviour of the cream cleanser group in our How to Choose a Face Wash guide. We have not hands-on tested this bottle, and we do not present the brand’s claims as our own measurements. Anything we could not confirm from a source stays marked unconfirmed rather than estimated.

Who it is for

Dry skin that feels tight after washing. The cream base and the ceramide and hyaluronic acid pairing are aimed at exactly this: clean the surface, leave the barrier alone, and skip the tight minute that follows most washes.

Sensitive skin that does better with fragrance out of the routine. The formula is fragrance free and non-comedogenic, the ingredient list is published in full, and the product is accepted by the National Eczema Association, which matters if your skin has a history of reacting first and forgiving later.

Not for: oily skin that wants a deep, fully rinsed finish, and anyone expecting one bottle to remove waterproof sunscreen and long wear makeup on its own. Both cases are served better by the alternatives below.

What to expect

Expect no lather. This is a lotion-like cream that spreads over wet skin, is massaged in with gentle circular movements (the brand’s own directions) and rinsed off. Skin that is used to foam often reads the first washes as “not really washing”; the honest test is the after-feel. Ten minutes after rinsing, the right cleanser leaves skin comfortable and calm, not tight, not coated. That is the result this formula is engineered for, and the standard in our How to Choose a Face Wash guide.

The MVE system is the brand’s stated design for releasing moisturising ingredients gradually rather than all at once. We record it as the formula’s design, not as a measured result of our own, and the comfort it aims at is a claim each reader’s skin settles in the first week or two of ordinary use.

Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Fragrance free and non-comedogenic, with the full ingredient list published
  • Three ceramides plus hyaluronic acid, aimed at barrier comfort while cleansing
  • Accepted by the National Eczema Association, and developed with dermatologists

Trade-offs

  • No lather at all, which some readers experience as not really washing
  • Light makeup only; waterproof sunscreen and long wear makeup need an oil or balm first step
  • Oily skin can find the finish filmy rather than clean

Limitations to know before buying

The ceiling of this cleanser is the same as its strength: it trades cleansing power for comfort, deliberately. If your skin turns shiny again within a couple of hours, if congestion is your main complaint, or if most of your cleansing problem is removing what you put on in the morning, this bottle will feel like it is not doing enough, because for your skin it is not. That is a fit problem, not a quality problem, and the fix is a different formula group, not a second helping of this one.

Alternatives

Same range, oilier skin: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser, a gel foam with ceramides and niacinamide that rinses fully clean. Choose it if the cream’s finish feels unfinished on your skin.

Step sideways for very reactive skin: Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser, a gel built on a shorter, minimal ingredient list, fragrance free. Choose it if even this formula’s ingredient list is longer than your skin tolerates.

Closest cream rival: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser, another fragrance free cream for normal to dry, sensitive skin, with ceramide-3 and niacinamide. Choose it if you prefer its lighter rinse feel.

All three are tracked in the Face Wash Database, where their recorded fields sit side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Does CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser foam?

No. It is a non-foaming, lotion-like cream, and that is deliberate: foam is a feel, not a measure of cleaning. It cleans with its surfactant system at cream strength, which is why dry skin tolerates it twice a day and why oily skin often finds it too gentle.

Can it take off makeup?

Light makeup, yes; removing dirt and makeup is among the uses the brand states for it. Waterproof sunscreen and long wear makeup are a different job: melt them first with an oil or balm cleanser, then use this as the second, water based step.
